Automated Weather Station (AWS) in the Philippines – WEHLO
WEHLO (Weather, Environment, and Hydromet Monitoring System) is a localized automated weather station network developed by Mapúa University's School of Civil, Environmental and Geological Engineering. It is offered through USHER's sister company, WEHLO.
What is an automated weather station?
An automated weather station (AWS) is a set of sensors, usually on a tower or mast, that measure weather conditions automatically and send the readings to a central system. Unlike a manual station, it records around the clock, so local governments can see conditions in their own area instead of relying on regional forecasts.
What WEHLO measures
WEHLO uses sensors of the kind already used by PAGASA and follows World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards.
- Rainfall (automatic rainfall measurement)
- Temperature and humidity
- Wind
- Air quality (AQI)
- River and stream water level, for flood monitoring
- Continues transmitting during power outages or weak mobile signal
Flood early warning and LGU weather stations
River level and rainfall readings help LGUs watch flood risk in their own area and support timely evacuation decisions. A localized station network gives a municipality, city, or barangay its own weather data instead of relying on distant regional stations.
Who it is for
WEHLO was developed for local government units (LGUs) and their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices. Data is delivered by web portal, SMS, or social media. Stations have been deployed with LGUs in Infanta and General Nakar in Quezon, and Pantabangan and Angat in Bulacan.
Frequently asked questions
What is an automated weather station (AWS)?
An AWS is a weather station that measures conditions such as rainfall, temperature, humidity, and wind automatically and transmits the data without a person taking readings.
Is there an automated weather station made in the Philippines?
Yes. WEHLO is a Philippine-made localized weather, environment, and hydromet monitoring system developed by Mapúa University with DOST funding.
What does a WEHLO weather station measure?
Rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind, air quality, and river water level.
Does a WEHLO station work during a power outage?
WEHLO is designed to keep transmitting data during power outages or weak mobile signal.
Can a weather station help with flood early warning?
WEHLO tracks rainfall and river or stream water level, which LGUs use to monitor flood risk and support timely evacuation. It supplies the data; warning protocols remain with the LGU.
